Michael Moravek

'Night Songs' is the new album by Michael Moravek. Recorded by Thomas Fuchs with Electric Traveling Show, it is a highlight in a series of remarkable albums that the singer-songwriter has recorded with his band. The ROLLING STONE magazine describes the album as "a commentary on the times we live in". An atmospherically dense and intimate collection of songs created between the hours of night and dusk.
Moravek was born in a country that no longer exists. He grew up speaking three languages and found another one in music, which enabled him to write himself a story that is neither oriented towards borders nor affiliations. Moravek is an admirer of Bob Dylan's art in song and lyrics, a lover of the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, Jaroslav Seifert and William Butler Yeats, influenced by the literature of Bernard Malamud, Paul Auster, Danilo Kiš and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. His musical interest is grounded in old gospel songs and in the beginnings of song narration, as represented by Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson or Skip James. He considers songwriting as a craft of storytelling and therefore appreciates the work of artists such as Nits, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Mike Scott, Willy Vlautin or Natalie Merchant. His songs carry a hopeful melancholy and always have an autobiographical undertone.
