Percussionist and composer Mike Cunningham is an accomplished and unique musician who has performed at countless venues across the UK and Europe with the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:2cMMdR4TrWIyM9KVlvcYf6" data-name="Chetham's Symphony Orchestra">Chetham's Symphony Orchestra</a>, Leeds College of Music and most notably <a href="spotify:artist:7nBZYpVAH6bD0QlD7Mpil7" data-name="Marc Almond">Marc Almond</a> during his 2015 UK Tour. Mike specialises in creating intricate covers of pop songs and film music for marimba and Xylosynth, with accompanying backing music; which he also orchestrates and produces.
Having started learning piano and violin aged 10, Mike’s interest in music began and continued into secondary school where he progressed to the drum kit which started his percussion obsession. At 16, Mike attended Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he continued his percussive studies with <a href="spotify:artist:1z9u3vLr7gw6IBS8CP8c2X" data-name="BBC Philharmonic">BBC Philharmonic</a> percussion principal Paul Patrick and <a href="spotify:artist:1RP1xGkJNMpFuqxpmKEwrb" data-name="The Hallé Orchestra of Manchester">The Hallé Orchestra of Manchester</a> percussion principal David Hext as well as Sophie Hastings.
Mike also studied composition at Chetham’s under the guidance of Dr Gavin Wayte which sparked his interest for film music and furthered his abilities as a composer. He was also part of many of the ensembles and orchestras, and performed at venues such as The Bridgewater Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Litchfield Cathedral and Band on the Wall.
Having graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2018, Mike is now a Marimba One Discovery Artist and is working towards developing his solo career both as a performer and composer and has aims of being signed to a major record label in the near future.
