Mike Dopsie was born into a royal family of zydeco, the African American, Creole dance music of south Louisiana. His grandfather Rockin’ Dopsie, the Crowned Prince of Zydeco, scored a gold record with a single on Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” which sold 16 million copies and won the 1987 Album of the Year Grammy.
Mike’s father Anthony and his uncles, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters, have shared world stages with Beyonce’, the Dixie Chicks, James Brown and other icons. Another uncle, who leads Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, is a two-time, Grammy nominee that Rolling Stone magazine calls “the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion.”
At the age of 26, Mike Dopsie is ready to blaze his path in the family’s rich legacy. “I feel like I’ve found my own sound, different from what everybody else is doing or what they’re hearing. At the same time, it’s zydeco.” “For the urban city night life.”
Mike Dopsie & Zydeco Entourage open 2021 with their debut single, “Explode.” The release is a sneak peak of a forthcoming album and bold sample of his urban, sophisticated flavor.
“My style has that infused R&B feel, with smooth jazz accordion riffs,” said Mike. “For Zydeco, I’m trying to open another door.” Mike has been grooming his style since the age of two, when he started playing with a toy accordion. At seven, he was working professional models with three rows of buttons and multiple keys.
Friends and fans have long begged him for an album. He’s finally answering the call.
