“Catchy in a way the Netherlands has never heard before,” wrote the jury when they crowned her the winner of the Amsterdamse Popprijs (The Amsterdam Pop Award) 2024. Miss Starling combines opposites: her raw and yet poetic lyrics, her catchy yet dreamy songs and her sincere yet theatrical stage presence.
Miss Starling uses the starling as a metaphor for how she sees people. “From a distance, a starling might seem like a plain, unremarkable bird,” she explains. “But when you look closer, you notice its feathers shimmer with vibrant, hidden colors.” She believes people are the same: you have to take the time to truly see someone and to uncover their unique colors.
