Mixed Asian Tryhards is an amateur Canadian duo consisting of high school classmates: 17-year-old lyricist and singer Bethanea Chou, and 15-year-old producer, Cohen Weston. As amateur North Vancouver composers, multi-instrumentalists, and live performers, the duo came together to produce their first album within six months.
Appropriate to the duo’s name; Cohen is of mixed Asian ethnicity (Filipino, English) and Bethanea is a second generation Taiwanese Canadian.
Side note: Bethanea does not know why her name is spelled the way that it is, and Cohen is stubborn. They like fighting over music.
Their first album – “Five +1” – is an exploration of genres, ranging from lo-fi to jazz, all the way to Cohen’s favorite but Bethanea’s least favorite: rock. The album was born from a school assignment with which they got carried away.
“We’ll admit, completing an album with no experience in studio recording or producing was ambitious. But with half a year of grueling work and learning to reign in our perfectionism, we finished the album within half a year and submitted the assignment on time to teachers.
Though this began as a school assignment, the academic side of the album is completely overshadowed by the overwhelmingly positive responses from listeners. It really felt amazing to know that our music has and is still impacting hundreds of people in our city. It’s still surreal to us. And as we grow, we hope to continue creating music for people to enjoy."
