Modakai was formed in 2003, in Dallas, Texas, by Daniel Keith, Joel Buchanan, Joey Otto, and Daniel Rhors. The band's EP, "Any Place Is Better Than Here", premiered on UK's BBC Radio 1 with Jo Whiley in 2005. Their single, "Hard To Keep", caused the EP to sell out in Virgin Megastores across the UK. The band toured the US following their 2nd and 3rd singles, "If You'll Stay" and "Movin' On". The band moved to New York City in 2006 playing Arlene's Grocery, Mercury Lounge, and the famed Knitting Factory. They were runner up in the Emergenza Battle of the bands, competing against bands from around the world. Their self titled debut album was completed and released in 2009, (produced by Rip Rowan and James McWilliams, and mixed by Paul Williams). A week before going on their UK tour, the band went on hiatus and did not release another EP of B-Sides, Bedroom Recordings, until almost 8 years later. In 2019, Daniel Keith announced a new album is in the works, called "Black Heart Society".
