Mondo Freaks was formed by Luke Hodgson and Graeme Pogson from a shared deep love of late ‘70s / early ‘80s Funk. Hodgson is one of Australia's most in demand session bass players and Pogson was half of futuristic Boogie duo GL and is the drummer in The Bamboos. The band includes some of Melbourne's finest players, with five vocalists: Jade McRae, Susie Goble, Francisco Tavares, Aaron Mendoza and Jason Heerah.

Over 10 years of residencies and appearances at local festivals a cult-like following was formed. They have been invited to tour Australia as the backing band for the Boogie King himself Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory / Logg / Inner Life / Universal Robot Band) as well as the inimitable Evelyn “Champagne” King.

After a cold call email an album’s worth of tracks ended up being mixed by Grammy winner Michael Brauer, who has mixed the likes of The Rolling Stones, Coldplay & Paul McCartney.
But Mondos inspired him as it recalled the music that he started his career working on: Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones and many more classics of that golden era.

What sets Mondos apart from other acts inspired by this era is their full live instrumentation plus a focus on vocals and great songwriting, creating something beyond instrumental grooves. In the studio and on stage they are a 10 piece ensemble with no programmed sounds to be heard. Mondo Freaks simply breathe life into a timeless sound and make it feel more relevant than ever.
