MOON CUP is the fierce two-headed beast brainchild of Rita Khayat (Spiral Perm), wielding hypnotic bass driven post-punk that is larger than the sum of its parts. Bringing the thunder to this dynamic two-piece is Emily Chen (Edith Lane, Erin Will Be Mad), delivering frenetic rhythms with savage precision. Smouldering, yet somehow tender, MOON CUP is quickly becoming a fixture of the Melbourne scene.
After years of writing and performing for no-one in her bedroom, Khayat cut her teeth bringing psych-driven bass to Spiral Perm before launching MOON CUP. Over a year after launching, having played shows in every pub, venue and dark corner in the city, recruiting a solid base of new and dedicated fans, MOON CUP finally release a taste of their massive, untethered sound.
The self-titled MOON CUP EP is a bold first step from an emerging artist that is part confessional, part abrasive but never strays from emotional honesty. Songwriter Rita Khayat takes a decisive step out of the bedroom to bring us a portrait of someone processing an upheaval in their identity. It is through music that her queer identity has found expression and across the four tracks she does the hard yards. Her challenges reverberate with us at our core.
Recorded at Phaedra Studios, engineered and produced by John Lee (Palm Springs, Laura Jean, Stonefield), the record is a polished emulation of what the band have to offer live.
