Moondogg was formed by guitarist Derwood (ex-Generation X) and singer Liz Westwood in the mid-90s after the collapse of their former band, Westworld. Westworld had been left penniless in Arizona after their then label, Savage Records, floundered. While the rest of the band returned home in 1991, the group’s central duo took a sabbatical in the small town of Carefree. Derwood used the time to learn slide guitar and they also made a small arthouse movie together. Eventually they returned to the UK in 1994 and began to immerse themselves in the club sounds of London. They embarked on a new musical project in keeping with these jungle and trip-hop influences, working alongside producer Martin Lee Stephenson, who records as Law And Order for labels such as Suburban Base and has produced several drum ‘n’ bass acts including Kenny Ken. Their demos eventually reached the ears of Tim Abbot, marketing consultant to Oasis and manager of Robbie Williams (ex-Take That). Abbot had recently established his own Better Records label, and considered Moondogg to be the perfect band to start the new label. The mix of slide guitar, dub and jungle proved instantly appealing on their debut single, ‘Wonderfool’, which was followed by the band’s debut album, Fat Lot Of Good, released in April 1996.
