MÓRY

Dominican singer-songwriter and producer, MÓRY, is a bi-cultural product that embodies the clash of the afro-centric tones and percussions derived from the multicultural influences of the Caribbean and its diaspora, the pop and emo punk of the early 2000’s, along with the melodic —and most importantly melancholic— Toronto sounds. “Toronto has very nostalgic and melancholic feelings, I add those influences when creating music, for me that’s what adds feeling to a song,” Born Moria Estrella, she moved to Toronto from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic at 11 years old. Falling in love with music at the tender age of five, her earliest memories consist of her prancing/dancing around with her father who would play artists such as Juan L. Guerra, Serrat, Mecano, Drexler and Silvio Rodriguez. This love would further evolve upon watching Telenovelas in her preteen years, series that would often evoke a sense of cult following and embraced particular aesthetics through their music and cinematography. As a young adult, the singer was one of two women that graduated and pursued a career in sound engineering at Trebas Institute, this degree added a level of professionalism to her craft. MÓRY is an embodiment of the transnational cultures that very often create the underground trends and inspirations of pop culture. She is the multi-genre substance that will transcend in the industry and enamore the masses: smooth melodies, sharp verses, and experimental sounds paired with global music.
