Formed in 1997, when Kyuss and Fu Manchu were blowing out speakers in car stereos across the land, Mr. Plow came together in Houston, Texas to dispense their own take on the tuned-down, turned-up heavy rock that inspired them so. The band’s name—a nod to an early 90’s era episode of the Simpsons by the same name—epitomizes the band itself: they are serious about rock, but not too serious about themselves and always up for a good time.
Mr. Plow’s sound draws on the musical stylings of the aforementioned stoner rock greats, leavened with a healthy dose of 90’s era grunge, a la Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Lyrically, the band draws heavily from a diverse body of influences running the gambit of pop culture, comics, science fiction, and other literature. 2006’s “Asteroid 25399” is a collection of songs inspired by the work of American author Kurt Vonnegut.
On their latest release, Maintain Radio Silence, out on Ripple Music in August 2018, the band’s first in more than twelve years, the lyrical inspiration continues to range far and wide—from the literary work of David Foster Wallace to the glorious elixirs that pour forth from Houston’s own Brash Brewing Company. Musically, Mr. Plow’s watchwords remain “heavy and catchy”: they strive to write songs that will get heads nodding and horns flying, with melodic hooks that bounce around the listener’s brain long after the high-decibel sonic assault fades away.
