Born Alexander Randolph in Richmond, VA, in 1937, Mr. Wiggles developed his stage presence early, performing with the Ben Cotton Theater Company in Newark, NJ. By the late 1950s, he had embraced the name Mr. Wiggles and was touring the East Coast as both a performer and novelty salesman before transitioning into the music industry.
Between 1964 and 1966, he founded Sound of Soul, a label that released records by artists like Little Tommy, Dickie Wonder, and Sebastian Williams. During this period, he also recorded a collection of Mr. Wiggles tracks, many of which remained unreleased for years.
In 1967, Randolph rebranded as Dickie Diamond, expanding his influence as a booking agent for acts such as Sly and The Family Stone, The Dells, The Delfonics, The Moments, and Patti LaBelle and The Bluebelles, whom he also managed.
By the 1970s, under the moniker August Moon, he made his mark as a producer, most notably with Seven Minutes of Funk by Tyrone Thomas & The Whole Darn Family—a track that became a hip-hop staple, sampled by Jay-Z, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Brandy, Wu-Tang Clan, and Busta Rhymes. Throughout the 1980s, he remained active in music, producing hip-hop records while also dedicating himself to social justice activism.
Despite an aneurysm in 1998 that left him wheelchair-bound, Moon’s passion never wavered. He continued to inspire until his passing in 2023, leaving behind a profound musical and cultural legacy in Richmond and beyond.
