'Skeletons' is a 2018 re-working of songs first released by artist and musician Al Murphy in 2004. Originally recorded in his sister's garden shed, the songs existed as rough demos that were given away at gigs on CDRs burned at home, with handmade covers replete with spelling mistakes.
Those CDs were passed around and eventually found their way to various major labels, all hungry to sign anyone with an acoustic guitar in the hope of them 'doing a José González'.
But they arrived as the New Acoustic Movement had grown old and Al had moved to Berlin and given up hope of further pursing music.
The songs remained unbothered until 2018, when Phil McCaughan from Modest! Management arranged for the songs to be remixed and mastered. It is thanks to him and Modest! that those songs appear here today, alongside the original demo versions.

The demo versions - shonky and unpolished - make up in atmosphere what they lack in finesse. The songs were recorded in an unheated garden shed as the bite of autumn took hold and much of the work had to be done at night after co-producer/engineer James Knowles' newborn son had been put to bed. So a portable heater would be switched off while parts were hastily recorded before the temperature dropped again. These recordings are steeped in seasonal chill and red wine and remain the best versions for it.
