Los Angeles-based New Balance is the songwriting project of Jeremy Leasure with accompaniment by Jacob Maag and Emily Monnig. Filled with orchestral arrangements and lush harmonies, New Balances flirts with elements of outsider folk, Nashville country, and 70’s indebted singer-songwriters. Their sophomore album "More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid," with its title referencing work from American artist Mike Kelley, is an exploration of the ways that people give of their love without expectation. Through 11 vignettes, Love Hours reveals stories of lost loved ones, deferred passions, societal collapse, and (in its brightest moments) love reciprocated. While each song ostensibly is fiction, they all reflect some aspect of Leasure reconciling with the world and his particular circumstances. These are backed by shape-shifting instrumentals that recall everything from the Bakersfield Sound, Laurel Canyon folk, and minor key mid century jazz-pop.
