Released on May 15th, “Watch Your Step” is Toronto-based artist Nickie Minshall’s debut single – an uplifting, warm-you-up indie pop anthem with a singer/songwriter softness, heavy on the harmonies and light on the production.
Billed as a shimmery ballad for over-thinkers seeking change, Nickie says “Watch Your Step” was inspired by a state of “romantic panic”: a wrestling match between what you should do versus what you want to do, if only inside your own head.
With two more singles to be released this summer, the 29-year-old musician plans to headline her first solo show in her home-city this coming fall.
Already known for a powerful, soulful voice from five years with indie rock band UKAE, Nickie’s no stranger to the stage – in its hay day, the five-piece ensemble released their EP Morning Story to a sold out Lee’s Palace, as well as opened for both Daniela Andrade at Adelaide Hall and Courtney Barnett at the Silver Dollar in Toronto.
Since UKAE’s farewell show two years ago, Nickie’s been writing her own songs and recording fresh, new material with the help of the band’s former lead guitarist, producer Andrew Dawson.
The release of “Watch Your Step” showcases a musician influenced but unconstrained by the plethora of genres she’s dabbled in – from folk, to EDM, to indie rock and back again. With “Watch Your Step”, Nickie’s introducing her brand of delicate, minimal pop to the world - finally, a genre the newly solo artist can call home.
