Noise Mountain rose from the ashes of dozens of Athens bands in 2018 to create a familiar sound that would defy easy categorization- something new, something loud.
Any listener can hear a well-oiled punk rock machine. Most will also note vocal melodies and harmonies born of a 90s pop sensibility. Many will detect hints of metal, alternative (there’s no way that bassist never played in a ska band), and classic rock. A closer listen betrays unmistakable post-punk tendencies in the structures and delivery, and drums somewhere between hardcore and an 808.
Yet, with the release of A Good Year for Azaleas, Noise Mountain has created a taut and cohesive work. Like a painter drawing upon the movements that came before, or a wine shaped by its terroir, Noise Mountain delivers a lean and composed EP, of its time & place, informed by the past, with an eye toward the future. With five songs clocking in under fifteen minutes, the band has made a concise statement- something new, something loud.
