Straight out of Halden, Norway and armed with irresistible tunes, impeccable style, and a laconic demeanor, comes the country quartet Norma.
The band’s debut EP was nominated for the Spellemann award in the country category and took home the Fjording award for best newcomer. Norma was raised on honest pints of lager at the local pub and study trips across the border to Sweden. Musically, they fill a gap on the Norwegian Americana scene with their delightful brand of country rock that nods to older legends like Poco and Grateful Dead, as well as newer icons like Wilco and GospelbeacH.
With a kind of melodic ironic distance, singer and frontman Jørgen Nilsen presents serious and relatable lyrical themes about social struggles and inner personal conflicts.
The rest of the band consists of Thor Andreas Murtnes-Hatlestad (guitar), Levi Sponvik (bass), and Oskar Rølling (drums). Together, the crew has backgrounds from other Halden-based projects such as Living Alma, HUMA LUMA, and Mandalai Lamas.
Norma has worked closely with producer Simen Følstad Nilsen (Aiming for Enrike, Embla and the Karidotters), who also provides his pedal steel expertise where needed.
If you're lucky enough to see this gang from Norway’s Mississippi live, the band’s interplay, musicality, and joyful playing will leave a smile that strecthes from ear to ear. Fine-tuned harmonies, cheeky guitar licks, and the rhythm section’s swaying groove make it hard not to stomp your boots in time.
