Nujakka (scuffle) is an energetic trio which explores communication through music. Nujakkas music is based in free improvisation which blends together with pre-composed “pipe songs”. Trios music has elements from the sorrow of scandinavian folk music and from the rage of free jazz.
Nujakka was founded in 2018 by Jaakko Arola (woodwinds), Aaron Koskelainen (double bass) and Elias Ojutkangas (drums). These three people shared the same enthusiasm towards free improvisation and they ended up improvising together, which eventually led into forming a band. Nujakkas debut album Piilopirtti was released in the fall of 2020. Most of the albums material is based in free improvisations which eventually turned into compositions when the trio learned to play them again. Nujakkas view over improvisation is often real-time composing.
