Musician records debut song at 70
Lay it on the floor was written by Hugh O’Shea and his musician son Patrick. It was recorded at Jo Ellis Studios in the Little Karoo in September 2021 and features three generations of O’Shea’s: Hugh on 12 string acoustic and vocals (70), Patrick on acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals (49) and grandson Finn (18) on vocals and tambourine with backbeat by Jo Ellis on bass/guitar and Chris Burgess on drums.
Hugh immigrated to South Africa from Cork, Ireland in late 1972 with his wife Rose and son Patrick. During the mid to late 70’s he was a resident entertainer at various hotels throughout South Africa. Although he entertained thousands of people over the years with popular songs of the day, he has never recorded any covers or original songs until 2021.
Lay it on the floor is his first time recording a song and also co-writing an original composition. The style is reminiscent of his sound when he performed and it could be described as a new old school sing-along folk song with a 60’s country feel. A familiar sound with an encouraging reminder during these difficult times.
