It's all storytelling, just in different rooms. That's what guides OJ Trop's vision and writing when crafting what has now been three EPs and even more mixtapes born from the Soundcloud and music blog era of the early 2010s. Piano being the heart of the Emmy award winner's musical training, he began making music in late high school but exploded that passion during his years at Northwestern University, where at one point he even won an improvised rap battle on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
His newly released EP Push Alert is built on breaking through the noise and a message that needs to be known, similar to a push alert on your phone. Starting with the first song Loose Screw, the EP highlights what it means to be perceived as robotic or predictable, and the attempt to break through to the real human. It's why musically the songs even sound progressively less robotic as the listener moves through, a representation of the journey. It's his most ambitious project yet and features artists like Loren Schaffer and Pip, with production from RyFy and Dreamlife, who have worked with artists like Logic, WESTSIDE BOOGIE, and more.
OJ Trop's previous EP, The A-Block, dropped in 2019 and featured artists like King Los and ziwe. His video for On The Road, featuring violinist Maegan Sparks and singer MC Cloud has been viewed more than 1 million times online. His debut EP Reporting Live dropped in 2017, featuring his debut music video Ready For It.
