Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Haitian parents, Okai is a world-traveled percussionist, M.C., and producer who has captivated global audiences with his extraordinary talents. With a deep passion for rhythm, Okai began his musical journey as a percussionist, mesmerizing listeners with his captivating beats. His rhythmic expertise has taken him across the Americas, Japan, and Africa.
He has mastered diverse rhythms from the African diaspora, including Bomba, Rumba, Son, Vodou rhythms, Cumbia, Bullerengue, and West African rhythms on the Djembe… Okai is also a seasoned conch shell player, paying homage to his Haitian ancestors and the indigenous Arawak and Taino people. He is deeply committed to honoring and sharing the cultural heritage of these communities.
As an M.C. and producer, Okai's creativity spans genres. His notable works include “Tonight We Fly” (Afrohouse), "Dekonstruktion of the Mind" (Hip-Hop), and "Int'l Party" (Regime Change). He co-founded Strings N Skins with Grammy-winning violinist La Lulu and is the lead vocalist for Brown Rice Family, the 2012 WNYC Battle of the Boroughs champions. Okai's talent led him to perform at the Haitian Ambassador's Ball in Bogota, Colombia. His rhythmic talents have been sought by renowned dance ensembles and prestigious venues, including Jacob's Pillow, Bates Dance Festival, and The Joyce Theater.
