Orange Peel, a Hanau-based band, emerged in 1968 as one of Germany's pioneering heavy-progressive acts, blending blues with early Krautrock. Founded by Michael Winzkowski (vocals, guitar), Leslie Link (guitar), Heinrich Mohn (bass), and 17-year-old Curt Cress (drums), their sound was influenced by blues and Jimi Hendrix. Their 1970 single "I Got No Time / Searching For A Place To Hide" marked their debut, followed by Winzkowski's departure to join Epsilon. With a new lineup, the band recorded their sole album under Dieter Dierks' direction, showcasing expansive improvisations and influences from Deep Purple, Santana, and Iron Butterfly. The album, featuring dramatic vocals by Peter Bischof, blended blues, psychedelia, and space rock with heavy organ and guitar solos, influencing later German bands like Eloy and Grobschnitt.
Orange Peel toured with bands like Deep Purple and the Byrds before disbanding in 1971. Afterward, Mohn joined Epsilon, and Cress became a renowned drummer with groups like Passport and Triumvirat. Bischof, meanwhile, shifted towards a jazz, soul, and funk fusion with Emergency. Despite their breakup, Orange Peel occasionally reunited for local concerts, performing blues and Hendrix covers, though they largely left their psychedelic roots behind.
