Hi thanks for stopping by.
At our core the Orchestra of Cardboard is a collaboration between me - Dan Edelstyn in London - songwriter and filmmaker - and Nick Graham Smith - multi-instrumentalist and producer in Sao Paolo. Recently we have been collaborating with Jolie Holland, Stevie Weinstein-Foner in Los Angeles.
My journey in music began really early when I took up the violin - after my dad died. He was a very famous doctor in Northern Ireland - a pioneering chemotherapy researcher and in charge of two cancer hospitals, one in Dublin and the other in Belfast. When he died the newspapers and TV ran long obituaries. I was just three at the time - but his ghost became a huge influence on my childhood.
One early stage of grief saw me smashing up a car and setting boats adrift.. but then later I started I to escape from the shadow by creating imaginary worlds of songs - and films. My mum thought I was mad and to toughen me up she sent me away to a strict Scottish boarding school. To try and get me in line the senior boys in my house stapled me to wall by my boxer shorts and told me my songs and plays were terrible. I vowed never to give up doing art. For me it represents freedom against oppression. If you want to find out more and get free downloads click on the link!
