"Palantír" is a music project by composer/audio engineer Christian Schimmöller from Germany. In Tolkien's fantasy world "Palantír" is translated as "what glances at the very distant" and is the name for an ancient crystal ball that can be used to look at distant lands and for telepathic communication with other persons far away. This inspired me when I looked for a name for my project back in 1990 - back when Palantiri weren't considered evil per se - since music for me can achieve similar effect. (These days the name Palantir sadly has a more negative ring to it caused by an infamous surveillance software company (ab)using it. Strange days...)
Musically this Palantir moves through various genres of music (instrumental, world, electronica, experimental, Berlin school, new age...), so it's not easy to put a label to it.
Palantir pioneered 3D audio production for headphones with the release of "Empire of Illusions" in 2000. https://open.spotify.com/album/1mQpLafRvoVORyX1nX9GeZ
