Pangolin is a 7-strong band based in Oxford, UK. Formed in early 2016, it aims to explore and exploit the natural overlaps between funk, jazz, soul and hiphop, developing original works that juxtapose virtuosic vocal lines and florid improvised instrumental solos with searing spoken word and finger-tight grooves. The group draws its influences from a wide range of artists such as Robert Glasper, J Dilla, Hiatus Kaiyote, Snarky Puppy, GoGo Penguin, Vulfpeck and Radiohead.
Their new record, Hiraeth, out on 22nd May 2020, displays their most expansive sound to date; Delving into issues of forced migration, racial inequality and environmental care, whilst simultaneously exposing broken hearts of love, loss, and longing. Dave Gilyeat (BBC Introducing Oxford) said of the first single, I Am The Pangolin, "An epic song... one heck of a taster of the album".
Personnel:
Jemimah Taylor - vocals
Femi Nylander - vocals
Jacob Rainbow - keys
Robert Dimbleby - keys/guitar
Tanzil Rahman - Sax/Flute
Harry Brokensha - bass
Dan Mort - drums
