"'Last Vestige of Holism' was Penpushers' breakthrough album, and despite having all the hallmarks of a band finding its feet, these flaws are only visible in retrospect, in light of what the band became - and if anything, they add to its charm on rediscovery of the album. For the uninitiated, Penpushers meld flickering, spooky soundscapes of wistful guitar around chunky, classic hip-hop beats. Occasionally producer The Brain flirts with Anticon-style crunches and glitches, clicks and pops - and the MCs echo this, often employing flows and styles that reference cLOUDEAD among others. Considering the meagre age of all the contributing MCS and musicians on 'Last Vestige...' it is something of a small masterpiece, with tunes like Ugly Tree and Acropolis standing up to (and indeed pissing all over) much of what passes for UK hip-hop today. Acropolis in particular delivers some impossibly good sci-fi rap. The foundation of a mighty band." [Bram Gieben]
