Pepi Mara grew up off-grid on Magnetic Island Australia. Leaving home young, he qualified as a welder before he was 20. Overcome by an urge to travel, Pepi found himself at a redhead convention in Ireland where he met his wife. He’s lived in a remote spot over there for 10 years.
Initially dabbling with drums, Pepi switched to rhythm guitar when his songwriting started in earnest. He recorded his folk-rock debut EP “Leap” just 2 years after learning his first few chords (2016). An album “In Cahoots” was recorded a year later with Christian Best, drawing inspiration from his favourite 70s’ acts like T-Rex & Warren Zevon.
Covid & 2 young kids meant “In Cahoots” went unreleased. Pepi retreated into the role of Dad & creative tradesman, playing the occasional gig. A keen observer with a passion for storytelling & a good sprinkle of humour, inspiration for his songwriting was never hard to find though.
2025 saw the Maras come to Australia where Pepi was quickly reminded of the Ozzie obsession with LandCruZars. He put his welding gloves & other distractions aside to pen novelty song “How Many Ks?”. Initially used for campfire laughs, his brother Lui helped ensure lyrical authenticity and Pepi recorded the song with Mark Myers (Mountain Kauri Studio).
You’d still be more likely to find Pepi carving a wooden spoon than playing a gig. He likes to keep his wife & daughters in his arms & the music industry at arm’s length. What’s next? Who knows? Certainly not Pepi…or his wife!
