Pete From Shipping was formed in Elon University in fall 2010. Friends John Tinkelenberg and Ryan Maass collaborated to create "My Money Looks Like Me," a hip-hop song about George Washington rising from the grave to pursue a rap career.
The band recorded lo-fi productions whenever and wherever they could, fusing a mix of rock influences with hip-hop and world beats. Soon, keyboardist Sheldon Roberson was added to the mix. The group recorded demos in dorm rooms, kitchens and a Nissan Xterra.
The following year, the band joined their friends for Spring Break. Amidst the typical college ruckus, the group encountered an alligator lurking in the pond behind the house, and they decided to make up his life story. His name was Pete, and he worked in the shipping department. His wife left him for a crocodile. The band liked the story, so they changed their name to Pete From Shipping.
Upon graduating in 2013, the group disbanded. Tragedy struck when Roberson was killed in a car accident in 2014.
The group reactivated in 2019 with the re-release of its debut single "Bobblehead Jesus."
