Peter Farnan’s abiding aesthetic is indie pop with an ‘art-twist’; songs that attempt to play with complex ideas and feelings, presented in a slightly off kilter musical setting. He continues to subscribe to a post-punk ethos that goes back over 40 years.
Farnan first came to prominence in 1980 as singer/guitarist and co-founder of post-punk art-pop outfit Serious Young Insects, who emerged from the St Kilda Crystal Ballroom scene. Farnan is best known to Australian mainstream rock audiences for the multi-platinum '80s/90s hitmakers Boom Crash Opera.Their 1986 Top 5 hit 'Great Wall' set them off on a ride that saw them working with the biggest producers in the world, including Alex Sadkin, Jimmy Iovine and Nick Launay.
By the end of the millennium Farnan moved into the world of theatre, film and art music. Farnan has spent the better part of the last two decades working as a composer and sound designer. He has worked with independent and mainstage companies both in Australia and overseas.
Peter released his first solo album, Maybe This Is Normal, in 2009, and in 2016, a collaborative project entitled Pesky Bones, Volume One which featured multiple vocalists singing his songs and productions, including Paul Kelly, Deborah Conway, Tim Rogers, Rebecca Barnard, Sean Kelly and Charles Jenkins.
Peter has now delivered his third, and perhaps most personal solo work, Home; songs of a mature performer who has carried his edgy musical sensibility through the years.
