Phauna was an indie electronic duo formed by singer-songwriter Sally McKay and her longtime collaborator Mike Young, who built their sound around lush, emotive vocals, house-influenced rhythms, and evocative electronic textures. In 2001, they were signed to Toronto’s Play Records, and in 2003, released their full-length debut Paradise, a vibrant collection of songs centered on love and hope, layered over infectious electronic grooves. Their spirited house version of Joy to the World also became a seasonal favourite, continuing to receive airplay each holiday season.
In 2008, after parting ways with Play Records, Phauna released the independently produced EP, "In the Dark", a six-song project exploring a more atmospheric, melancholic sound. The track "Always Here" was later featured by San Francisco-based label, Boutique Electronique, Digital Bliss 2, supporting female electronic artists worldwide, and continues to attract listeners years later.
Mike’s illness brought their creative partnership to a close in 2009, and he sadly passed away in 2018. Since then, Sally has continued to evolve as an independent artist through projects such as Lovely Trees, while honouring the legacy of Phauna’s intimate and emotionally charged electronic storytelling.
