KEXP recently called Phil Augusta Jackson “the overachiever of multi-hyphenates.” If you had to list them all out, those hyphens would be – deep breath now – musician-and-screenwriter-and-actor-and-director-and-producer-and-poet. If you wanted to tack on a few more hyphens, you could squeeze in “three-time-Emmy-nominee” too.
Jackson’s perhaps best known for his TV work now, having written for Key & Peele, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and, currently, HBO’s Insecure, where he is a Co-Executive Producer and just earned the third of those Emmy nominations. But his first love is music. He got his start in 4th grade playing saxophone in his Philadelphia church before learning to make beats in high school. And after college, he began self-producing EPs and mixtapes – and he’s reached his most realized artistic form on his new project, The Redondo Tape.
Work on the project began shortly after he moved to LA’s Redondo Beach to begin writing for Insecure. He partnered with up-and-coming producer Nick Lee (Demi Lovato, Dillon Francis, Poo Bear) to bring his vision to life, recording from a home studio he built in his closet.
The Redondo Tape is an eclectic EP that has already garnered positive attention from outlets like Uproxx, The AV Club, KUTX, and NPR, among others. And it's clear Jackson's musical journey is just getting started. -- Ray Padgett, Shorefire Media
