Pissing Contest is a four-piece punk band from Richmond, VA specializing in raucous, idiosyncratic slop-shred and socio-scatalogical commentary.
The Pissing Contest mantle dates back to the murky pre-history of 2011, born of the friendship between frontman-bandleader Jean-Baptiste Stowell and the late great Richmond rapper Joe Threat, given name Joe Davis. Following Joe's passing in 2013, Stowell enlisted mutual friends Justin Lewis and David Long to memorialize Joe with a handful of proper Pissing Contest recordings. The concept expanded over the next two years as the trio wrote new material and added drummer Ben Padgett. In 2015 the private project became public with a string of shows and the release of "Pissing Contest Shits the Hits," an 11-song, 18-minute album that tested the very definition of "LP." The closing track "Syd Ryfus Was Raw" speaks to the bands origins and the loss of Joe Threat, eulogizing him under the punk pseudonym he created for the project. In subsequent years Padgett exited the band to pursue luthier school and was replaced by drummer Sage Maxwell.
On may 2nd, 2019, the foursome release their follow-up album "The Fountain," a sonic and structural leap forward that furthers the aesthetic of toilet-humor existentialism and stupid-short songwriting that pushes the boundaries of the punk idiom.
