Formed at university in Hereford in late 2022, Plant Species have always tried to do things differently. All members come from very different musical backgrounds which has allowed them to produce consistently varied and interesting music. For example, their debut album ‘Picture Day’ takes a fluid journey from instrumental rock to pop, jazz, folk and finally psychedelia all within the first half, yet no transition is jarring. In contrast, their live shows are stripped back, raw renditions of these instrumentally complex pieces that sit comfortably alongside adapted covers and exciting jams. They also try to bring with them the sense of fun and chaos that so frequently interrupts their rehearsals.
Their biggest inspirations are classic, prog and yacht rock bands of the 70s (notably The Who and Fleetwood Mac), but they also draw on modern singer-songwriters like Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers and modern blues-rock groups.
