Purient

Purient is the pseudonym of DIY electronic producer and vocalist, Kate Durman. A fixture of Naarm’s thriving electronic music scene (and one-third of ultra-emotive dream-pop band Acopia), Purient creates sonic worlds that encompass both the ethereal and the brash; subverting pop archetypes to produce shimmering astral textures, ominous synths and dizzying experimental arrangements.

With her ability to set pop-leaning vocals and ambient textures atop skittering and abrasive club beats, Purient has carved out a niche in the electronic music scene that is uniquely her own. Often exploring themes of fantasy, desire, intimacy and disconnect, Purient draws inspiration from the interplay between the physical and emotional aspects of human connection.

‘Mwah’ is a five-track dance/electronic EP, released via UK’s Steel City Dance Discs on November 21. It showcases Durman’s ability to seamlessly blend club-adjacent beats with melancholic synths, layered with emotive, elusive, and pop-driven vocals.

‘Mwah’ nudges her listeners closer to more traditional features of dance/electronic-pop music than Durman’s previous releases, without losing her dreamy and distinguishable Purient charm.
