@Jada Nycole Ellise is a Detroit born vocalist, songwriter, producer, and artist. Formerly known as qtz. (quartz), Ellise creates a soulfully whimsical world of sounds, cultivating a sound reminiscent of classic 90s neo-soul and R&B. She cites <a href="spotify:artist:2FjkZT851ez950cyPjeYid" data-name="Bobby McFerrin">Bobby McFerrin</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0uZRjholJ0fVC2J9EvnYnj" data-name="Meshell Ndegeocello">Meshell Ndegeocello</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0uNEy4544VZq2KOl7BsLuo" data-name="Lalah Hathaway">Lalah Hathaway</a> and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins as some of her influences. Ellise also credits 90s gospel and musician <a href="spotify:artist:1xy9x7h2jKEg8iG22Sml32" data-name="Tye Tribbett">Tye Tribbett</a> for "encouraging the discovery of her own musical aesthetic" early on in life.
Ellise attended the performing arts high school The Detroit School of Arts as a vocal major and has performed background vocals for jazz vocalist <a href="spotify:artist:6PmFyvJI0cXPQnbCqlhiv9" data-name="Kathleen Bertrand">Kathleen Bertrand</a>. She has also performed as an opening act for artists such as <a href="spotify:artist:3YJMzGjAm245zwJooY7PEj" data-name="Chrisette Michele">Chrisette Michele</a> , <a href="spotify:artist:7zmk5lkmCMVvfvwF3H8FWC" data-name="Elle Varner">Elle Varner</a>, and soul legends <a href="spotify:artist:6rXycobs8wkWicUGLtmB0n" data-name="Frankie Beverly">Frankie Beverly</a> & <a href="spotify:artist:3DvdryKH4O95ZnsUZJKXpt" data-name="Maze">Maze</a>.
Ellise's debut single "Up" was released in the summer of 2016 under the moniker qtz. and was followed by the release of the three song EP SiO2. Most recently, Ellise continued making music under the name and released Going Direct in the summer of 2018 as her senior project as an undergrad student at Spelman College. This EP was recorded, produced, and engineered solely by Ellise in her dorm room closet with producer Luxe.wav being credited as co-producer on two tracks. This project was the first of its kind, with no other student in the college's history ever releasing a self-produced music project as a partial requirement for graduation.
