Queen Maile (Maile Naehu) is a Kanaka Maoli–Boricua educator, performer, and Aloha ʻĀina activist from Molokaʻi whose work bridges music, art, and Indigenous storytelling. In 2023, she received the prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for directing and performing Hoʻokupu – A Hip Hop Anthology of Hawaiian History, a collaborative project with Hawaiʻi MCs, producers, professors, and educators. This 13-song album and curriculum brings Hawaiʻi’s history to life through hip-hop and is used from elementary classrooms to the University of Hawaiʻi. Most recently, the Hoʻokupu collective performed at FestPAC 2024.
Alongside her husband Hano, Maile performs as “The Paniolo Prince and his Queen Maile,” blending hip-hop with Hawaiian culture to inspire youth. She also directs the Molokaʻi Nui a Hina Project, a multigenerational community mural and storytelling initiative that highlights resource stewardship and the power of the visual arts. Through these award-winning projects, Maile has become a leading voice in using music and the arts to teach, empower, and cultivate a new generation of cultural guardians.
