The idea to form the band came to Cipactli Nezahualcoyotl, the lead singer for the group, by way of a dream. He states, "Tlaloc came to me in a dream and said 'You will form a band named Quetzalcoatl and you will infuse modern musical sensibilities with Mesoamerican rhythms to honor our ancestral past. You will relay our story in musical form for future generations”.

The band is the pioneer of Tribal Latin Rock and founded in the Chicano subculture of low riders, mariachi guitars and Aztec mythology.
