Ever since she can remember, Ramona has lived in the in-between. Growing up in the Greater Toronto Area, her world was a vibrant mix of cultures: the soulful melodies of Mexican and Latin musical traditions she absorbed at home stood in stark contrast to the indie rock, pop, jazz, and soul that dominated Toronto’s music scene. This duality wasn’t a challenge for Paez—it was an education.
Her passion for music flourished as she attended an arts high school and earned a Bachelor of Music from Humber College, where her artistry found room to grow. Along the way, she carved out a name for herself not just as a singer-songwriter but as a versatile producer, having her work sampled by Swae Lee, Russ, and produced for poet Rupi Kaur.
It wasn’t until she began reconnecting with her Latin American roots that she found her true sound. Discovering the power of Mexican folk icons like Chavela Vargas lit a fire within her, inspiring her to experiment with Spanish-language vocals and Latin-inspired production. “It was the catalyst,” she explains, “to embracing my identity and blending it with the Western music I’ve always loved.” The result? A sound as eclectic as her influences—from Weezer, to Manu Chao, and all heart.
Today, Ramona Vee is laser-focused on creating music that bridges the cultural gaps she’s always navigated. With every note, Ramona Vee reminds us that the magic lies in the spaces between.
