Since his emergence in the mid-'80s, Randy Sandke has been one of the top swing-oriented trumpeters in jazz. His older brother Jordan (himself a fine trumpeter) introduced Randy to the many styles of jazz. In 1968 he formed a rock band with <a href="spotify:artist:5IkynsVZoak9UR2Xt8qsMj">Michael Brecker</a> that featured a horn section and they played at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. However, Sandke had to turn down the opportunity to join <a href="spotify:artist:4NgfOZCL9Ml67xzM0xzIvC">Janis Joplin</a>'s band due to a hernia in his throat. Although an operation corrected the problem, Sandke's loss of confidence resulted in him deciding to take up the guitar and he worked in New York as a guitarist for the next decade. Finally, he was persuaded to take up the trumpet again and Sandke spent five years with <a href="spotify:artist:7vP4zvpQXJgKVcFeGNAxxI">Vince Giordano's Nighthawks</a>, worked regularly with <a href="spotify:artist:38ft9KbJkq7eEVAxWt9yOs">Bob Wilber</a>, and he was a part of <a href="spotify:artist:1pBuKaLHJlIlqYxQQaflve">Benny Goodman</a>'s last band during 1985-1986. Since that time Sandke has worked and recorded with <a href="spotify:artist:1rQ8RuN5MY5dBeBz81fIho">Buck Clayton</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5IkynsVZoak9UR2Xt8qsMj">Michael Brecker</a>, the Newport All-Stars, <a href="spotify:artist:2Kn5swSfLmUU2WEJVlQvJY">Jon Hendricks</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:78vaS34w6HBZi3epzpfTz9">Ralph Sutton</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5FrL8C2vYIUL7In8fWmglA">Kenny Davern</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5dlCVmfRbWVGOJYHzGyk32">Benny Carter</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5RzjqfPS0Bu4bUMkyNNDpn">Dizzy Gillespie</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3od5Mdj7OgLATvDkDynmHH">the World's Greatest Jazz Band</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4X8QFzZ1HqwPfwDfyjtwXC">Mel Tormé</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7FMGtucexJvUxVz7scydEL">Joe Williams</a> among many others, touring Europe over 20 times.
