Red Beat formed originally around 1978 and comprised 3 brothers Roy, Martin and Paul Jones on vocals, guitar and drums with Majid Ahmed on bass. They recorded an EP of four tracks in 1979 and after moving to London released it on Malicious Damage, a label started by Killing Joke which also featured Ski Patrol. The leading EP track, Machines In Motion was single of the week in music paper Melody Maker and the band recorded a session for legendary radio DJ Jon Peel which he repeated several times. Now with Kevin Mann on guitar and Chris Thompson on bass they played support to some big names including U2, The Damned, Killing Joke and the Angelic Upstarts. They formed their own label Manic Machine Products and released two more singles See/Survival and Dream which were distributed through Rough Trade.
The songs now on The Eternal Party and Change & Phoenix albums were recorded in the first half of the 80s including Power Reflex which was released as a single in Germany. The Red Beat catalogue was finally restored and remastered by Roy around 2015. The 2020 Chameleon Regeneration EP is a return to the rocky sound of The Wheel. Reggae music reappears with the track Zachary Jones, featuring real brass, female backing vocals and guitar and toasting from Cheez McKenzie. The new album, Bluestone Traveller combines the recent singles with some new songs with flavours as different as jazz, rock, reggae and folk to create a soundscape in which postpunk takes flight into a new epoch.
