In 2016, Red River Hymn rose out of the ashes an unfruitful record label deal that had come to an end for frontman, Patton Hughes. In the wake of one door closing, another opened. Hughes had already started working up new material signaling the beginning of something entirely different. Together, with Joe Shotts, lead guitar, they formed a new group and opted to go under the moniker, Red River Hymn.
2017 saw the band studio-bound to record their debut album, “Kudzu.” However, between the time they finished recording and ultimately releasing it, the original rhythm section split from the collective, and the future of the band loomed uncertain. Still proud of the work they had created, Hughes and Shotts didn’t want it gathering dust on the shelf; so, they released it into the world. The album garnered some local acclaim, but more importantly, it helped bring together a new rhythmic foundation in bassist, Jonathan Mason and drummer, Harris Owens. Red River Hymn was back.
From there, they moved forward by releasing a new single -- their take on Prefab Sprout’s “Bonny” (2019) and then followed that with their EP, “Oakview” (2021) produced by friend and collaborator, Britton Deuel. The EP saw the band stretching into some new creative territory, all while staying true to their sound and vision.
Now, in 2024, Red River Hymn has further evolved with the addition of drummer Steve Kim, and are currently recording their next album with producer, Morgan Stratton.
