On Saturday, October 15, 1977, if you had $3.75 to spare, you could have caught Van Halen at the Pasadena Civic Center, just before they took off on a world tour. Also on the bill? Opening trio Reddi Killowatt, whose guitarist, Terry Kilgore, was a preternaturally talented guitar player from a young age, not unlike his childhood pal Eddie Van Halen. Rounded out by drummer Mark Scaggs, and bassist Rick Carpenter, Reddi Killowatt released its lone 7inch, on their own Radioblitz imprint. The b-side “Liquid Lady” was a high-voltage hard rock workout that eventually reappeared on U.S. Metal - Unsung Guitar Heroes compilation issued by Mike Varney’s Shrapnel Records. Shortly after, MCA Records took note of Reddi Killowatt, sending a rep to the band’s garage for an audition. Confronted with the trio’s big sound, “They thought were a five-piece band,” Kilgore said. “But we were three 20-year-old guys in T-shirts, and they were like, ‘We can’t do anything with you fuckers!’”
