Technical post-hardcore from Auckland, NZ with influences ranging from tender emo tunes, to head-crushing hardcore rhythms. The band formed in mid 2015 with the single goal of subverting tiring and overdone hardcore and metal tropes in favour of experimental and progressive ideas that form the basis of the band's sound from the likes of indie emo, funk, alternative rock, and avant-garde.
Since 2015, REI have made a name for themselves in the New Zealand local scene for their progressive approach in the realm of emo and hardcore favouring the use of technical and discordant song structures versus the over-used trope of open power chord breakdowns from their Kiwi peers. Combining their love of emotional / experimental post-hardcore, harsh prog, Japanese video games and the aesthetic of anime, they have earned recognition as one of the forerunners of New Zealand hardcore scene for their uniqueness and undying commitment to the identity they have crafted for themselves.
