Rhizome and The Flavonoids were formed by Western Smith in 2022 on the temperate waters of Rye, Australia, during the world's longest lockdown. Their infectious rhythms soon began to contaminate the world.
The first two releases – 'Synthetic Soup' and 'Snifter of Space' – had Smith performing as a one-man band, while also producing the recordings. However in 2023, a full band of Flavonoids were commissioned to perform live – turning heads of conservative Melbourne audiences.

In June of 2024, the LA Weekly described the band as “minting a new wave of new no-wave, fit for discerning aliens”.
