Multi-instrumentalist and composer Richard Batelaan has been involved in music his whole life. His music finds the balance between complexity, artistry, and accessibility. As a double major in music performance and physics at UNL, he has gigging experience on saxophone, piano, vocals, flute, and clarinet; as well as research experience in architectural acoustics, bioacoustics, and rocket acoustics. Richard’s extensive knowledge of jazz and classical music heavily influences his composition style. His compositions range from classical piano repertoire to jazz combo and big band arrangements. He has performed with various saxophone ensembles, jazz combos, the UNL Jazz Orchestra, and UNL Jazz Singers, as well as many solo classical saxophone and piano works. He has played several gigs around Lincoln with small jazz groups including the Batelaan-Bos duo, and a Rwandan band called Live Lyve. Most recently, Batelaan is the winner of the UNL Undergraduate Concerto Competition and looks forward to performing the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto with the UNL Symphony Orchestra. As a songwriter, Richard is soon releasing an album of all his pop compositions from the last five years.
