Critically acclaimed musician Richard MacKenzie is hailed as ‘one of the rising stars of the British lute scene’ by Early Music Today Magazine and, in a review from the OUP’s Early Music journal, the reviewer was left stating, ‘we hope for many more discs from him.’ He is a sought-after soloist and collaborative artist on early and classical guitars, and lutes. The Sixteen, The King’s Consort, The Hanover Band, Ex Cathedra, The OAE, The City Waites (dir. Lucie Skeaping), The Royal Opera House, Opera North and Shakespeare’s Globe (seven productions and multiple workshops) count among his many collaborations.
Born in Southampton, Richard began playing lute at the age of 15. He was largely self-taught before attending Chetham’s School of Music in the sixth form, later winning a place to read music at The Queen's College, University of Oxford. Since completing his degree, Richard has seen the release of five acclaimed solo albums, collaborated on many well-received ensemble projects, and has been published as an editor and a reviewer. He has performed at every major British early music festival, and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3's 'In Tune' and 'Lunchtime Concert' series on multiple occasions. Additionally, Richard has appeared alongside Andrew Marr on BBC Radio 4, and on BBC 2 with Jools Holland. Soundtrack appearances include 'Bill' – featuring the cast of BBC television's 'Horrible Histories', in addition to films including 'Draw on Sweet Night' & 'The Four Warriors'.
