RICKY j started his musical career working in Montreal as a club MC. The DJ he worked with at the time was Kent "Majess" Austin. The pair soon teamed up to record some of their own party hip-hop tunes, hoping the demos would find their way into the right hands. Those hands were at Warner Music Canada. RICKY j was put under contract with the label. The debut single "No Means No" hit the market in early 2001. Some heavy hitters were brought in to help with that first single, including Michael Mangini, probably best known for his work on the hit "Who Let the Dogs Out."

A few months after "No Means No" was released, RICKY j completed work on his first album, Lose Control. A lot of artists helped out in one way or the other with the album, including Trisha Campbell, J Brass, Tarzan Dan, Tara Chase, RC2, Carl Henry, Stephen Baldwin, and others. A few of the tracks on this debut full-length offering are "Gotta Get Up," "Loot," "Partyin' Now," "Rick What?," "Lollypop," "My Life," and "I Just Can't." ~ Charlotte Dillon
