Ripple Effect Band are an all woman’s band coming from Maningrida, Northern Territory. Following in the footsteps of great bands before them, Ripple Effect have a new take on the musical tradition of Arnhem Land where, until the present time, both ceremonial and more contemporary musical forms have been almost entirely the domain of men. These women are forging new ways of musical performance composing, playing instruments and forming their own band.
Maningrida is a coastal community in Arnhem Land about 400km east of Darwin with the Kunibídji people as traditional landowners. The band reflects the multilingual nature of Maningrida, singing in the Aboriginal languages of Ndjébbana, Na-kara, Burarra, Kunwinjku and Kune as well as English. As multi-instrumentalists, they swap around so that each woman can move forward and sing in her own language.
