Roi Turbo is an electronic dance-rock duo, formed in Cape Town and now based in London. On their second EP, Bazooka, brothers Benjamin and Conor McCarthy celebrate rhythm’s permanence, the clash of analog and digital, and a shared sonic vision that blurs genre lines. Inspired by beat-driven siblings like Soulwax, they craft a disco-funk-house sound that skips across continents and eras, landing with a distinct contemporary edge.
Growing up in Cape Town, Conor (32, multi-instrumentalist) and Ben (28, producer) ditched drum lessons for self-taught strategies—Bloc Party records for Conor, YouTube tutorials for Ben. They shared a bedroom and transformed a spare room into a studio, debating band-driven sounds vs. electronic production—unknowingly shaping their future style.
Their influences span William Onyeabor, ‘80s South African bubblegum, Nigerian disco, and danceable rock à la Paul Epworth. Lockdown refined their sound, and in 2023, they moved to London, embracing a streamlined, high-energy approach for Bazooka. Tracks like “Dystopia” and “Hot Like Fire” lean into dance-pop, while “Super Hands” channels hypnotic disco. At its core, Bazooka captures their lifelong bond, shared influences, and unified vision. With the tank full and the roads open, Roi Turbo is just getting started.
