Rollo White grew up outside of Washington, D.C., listening to John Prine records and soaking in the distinct D.C. music scene, which included the bluegrass of the Seldom Scene and the Country Gentlemen, as well as the scorching rockabilly of guitarists like Bill Kirchen and the legendary Danny Gatton. Later -- in both D.C. and NYC -- he spent time performing all kinds of music -- everything from post-punk no wave to avant-garde jazz to R&B and gospel. But always, he found his way back to his roots in country music.
For his long awaited debut album, White assembled a band of first-rate Nashville musicians -- who've played and recorded with the likes of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Loretta Lynn, Kacey Musgraves, Tanya Tucker, Brandi Carlile, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello and Father John Misty, among many others.
The result is a potent brew of kickass back-porch country, Prine-inspired storytelling, cry-in-your-beer honky-tonk, anthemic rock n' roll a la Drive-By Truckers -- with some Leonard Cohen-ish sacred dark poetry thrown in for good measure.
